On June 19th, we pause to recognize a pivotal moment in American history—Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. This day commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now free—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
What Is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth marks the official end of slavery in the United States and stands as a powerful reminder of the struggle for freedom, equality, and justice. In 2021, it was finally recognized as a federal holiday, acknowledging the deep significance it holds for Black communities and for the nation as a whole.
It’s a time to reflect on the past, celebrate progress, and continue the work of building a future rooted in equity and respect for all.

Why Juneteenth Matters Today
Juneteenth is more than a historical moment—it’s a living legacy. It represents:
Resilience in the face of oppression
Celebration of Black culture, history, and achievements
Education about the realities of American history
Commitment to justice and continued progress
In the spirit of this holiday, we are reminded that freedom must be nurtured and protected for every generation.
